Short answer: The IRS says that if you need more time to file you can request an extension by the April filing due date, which gives you until October 15 to file without penalties, but you must still pay what you owe by the April date; the extension is only for filing. The April 2027 due date is expected to be April 15, 2027 (a Thursday); that date is our assumption from the usual rule, which we didn't confirm on an IRS 2027 calendar. October 15, 2027 is a Friday.

Three ways to get the extension (IRS)

  1. IRS Free File (electronic request).
  2. Form 4868 (mail, e-file partner or tax professional).
  3. Paying what you owe online and checking the box that the payment is part of an extension request (no separate form needed; you get a confirmation number). Living abroad on the regular due date may give an automatic 2-month extension (IRS).
