Short answer: We cannot tell you which is better, and we haven't tested either. What the IRS says shapes what you should check: you must calculate basis before you file, the 1099-DA may show proceeds without basis, and you still report everything even without a form. So compare how each tool handles your exchanges, your cost basis and your Form 8949 output.
What the IRS says that matters for software
- Brokers report gross proceeds and, in some cases, basis. "You must calculate basis before you file your tax return."
- For 2025, the filing requirements generally apply to U.S. brokers; foreign exchanges may not send you a 1099-DA, yet those transactions must still be reported.
- Digital assets acquired before 2026, or transferred into a broker's custody, are "noncovered securities" for 1099-DA purposes, so basis may be missing (covered vs noncovered).
- The 1099-DA proceeds figure is already reduced by transaction fees (box 1f instructions).
